Dr G S Rawat has done Bachelors and Masters in Botany from Kumaon University, Nainital. He also did his Ph D in Taxonomy & Ethnobotany from the same college. He taught Plant Ecology and Taxonomy at Kumaon University. He also served at Botanical Survey of India for some time. He is a member of the IUCN/SSC Orchid and Medicinal Plant specialist groups and a life member of the Association for Plant Taxonomy. He joined Wildlife Institute of India in 1986 as a Professor and has held various positions at the Institute since then. He is Dean at Wildlife Institute of India.

Plant ecology is a subdiscipline of ecology which studies the distribution and abundance of plants, the effects of environmental factors upon the abundance of plants, and the interactions among and between plants and other organisms. Conservation is the preservation or efficient use of resources in an efficient or ethical manner.
