How President Suresh Nautiyal got into Green Politics?

I am perpetual struggler in search of peace, perfection and participatory democracy in an ecological manner and in all spheres of human and non-human life. Politically Green, I am a human and animal rights defender. I have served as the Vice-President of the Uttarakhand Parivartan Party or UKPP, India. I have also served as a Member of the Global Greens Coordination committee. I am also a Board Member of Democracy International, which is based in Cologne, Germany. I am the National Convenor of India Greens.

What Is Green Politics? Green politics is a political ideology that emphasizes the interdependence of human beings and the environment. It seeks to address ecological crises, promote sustainability, and advocate for social justice by fostering respect for diversity and participatory democracy. My journey into green politics began in 1974, inspired by grassroots movements like the Chipko movement, which focused on forest conservation and the fight against environmental degradation. The principles of green politics allow us to envision a future that prioritizes ecological harmony, where people, nature, and society can coexist and thrive together. Education Green Politics in India My educational journey has equipped me with knowledge and experiences that shape my understanding of green politics today. I have pursued various degrees, including an honours degree in English literature from Delhi University and a master's in communication and journalism. Yet, the true essence of my education came from grassroots activism and my immersion in political activities, where I learned the importance of ecological balance and the need for comprehensive political change in India. History & Genesis of Green Politics The history of green politics is rich and complex, rooted in global initiatives that address the dire environmental challenges we face. Globally, throughout the years, we have witnessed the emergence of significant green figures—such as Petra Kelly and Wangari Maathai—who have inspired movements worldwide. In India, my efforts to establish a green party can be traced back to my participation in various environmental movements, culminating in the founding of India Greens. This party aims to represent ecological perspectives in the political landscape, reflecting a strategic shift towards green ideology. Political Ideology Central to green politics is its foundation on values such as ecological wisdom, sustainability, and participatory democracy. I embrace this ideology, inspired by figures like Gandhi, who taught us the importance of stewardship of the earth. To understand green politics, one must appreciate this broader political and ethical landscape, recognizing that it is not only about promoting environmentalism but also about advocating for a more equitable and just society for all. Skills Communication Skills Effective communication is vital in the realm of green politics. To foster a collective understanding of ecological issues, I prioritize engaging with various stakeholders—be it community members, political leaders, or activists. Over the years, I have honed my ability to articulate complex environmental concerns in straightforward language, ensuring that the message resonates with diverse audiences and instigates meaningful dialogue around sustainability. Throughout my career, I have embraced leadership roles, particularly in founding the India Greens party. Transparency & Credibility Transparency and credibility are cornerstones of effective leadership in green politics. Building trust with the public requires an openness regarding our goals, policies, and methods. I strive to uphold these values by ensuring that my actions reflect commitment, while encouraging accountability within the systems we aim to change, as they are paramount to fostering faith in the green movement. Trust Building Fostering trust is a significant part of green politics, as it forms the basis of collaborative efforts to effect change. One of the key elements in my work has been to create bonds with constituents and fellow activists, allowing for collective engagement and a shared vision for environmental sustainability. Trust is the glue that enables effective grassroots mobilization, making it a vital aspect of successful advocacy. Positives Politics for Future Green politics is inherently forward-thinking, addressing the pressing challenges of climate change and environmental degradation. I am energized by the notion that through our political efforts, we can inspire others to rethink our relationship with nature and reshape societal values to prioritize ecological well-being. Organic Politics The essence of green politics lies in its organic nature, emphasizing simplicity and a return to methods that nurture the earth rather than harm it. Through my advocacy, I underscore the need for a lifestyle aligned with ecological sustainability, reminding individuals that small steps—like reducing carbon footprints—can lead to significant collective impacts. It is about nurturing a healthier world that values all living beings equally. Challenges Unawareness One of the most formidable challenges we face in promoting green politics is widespread unawareness. Many individuals equate environmentalism solely with tree planting, failing to grasp the depth and breadth of green principles. This gap necessitates extensive educational initiatives and grassroots outreach to meaningfully communicate the importance of green politics and its relevance to everyday life. Political Interference Green politics must also contend with political interference from mainstream parties that may reject or undermine our environmental agenda. Often viewed as anti-development, proponents of green policies face resistance from well-established political entities that prioritize growth at the expense of ecological health. Overcoming these hurdles requires persistence and a robust, grassroots framework to assert the significance of sustainable practices. A Day Of Green Politics A typical day for me starts at dawn, reflecting on my commitment to greenery and sustainability over a cup of tea. I dedicate time to writing a green thought for the day, sharing it on social platforms to inspire others. Following that, I engage with fellow activists, discussing current initiatives and strategizing on upcoming campaigns to advocate for greener policies. My day is filled with meetings, collaborations, and continuous learning—whether through reading relevant literature or engaging with community members about local environmental issues. In the evening, I often meet friends and colleagues to discuss our vision for a sustainable future, finding joy in the community that shares my passion. As night falls, my mind shifts to my personal reading—always seeking new knowledge about green principles. While personal time is often scant, I am fulfilled knowing that every effort made today contributes to a more sustainable tomorrow. The journey of green politics, as shared through my experiences, reflects not just a personal commitment but a collective responsibility to safeguard our planet for future generations. Green politicians are not just advocates; we are stewards of the earth, working tirelessly to forge a sustainable future.
