It is considered the second-oldest engineering discipline after military engineering, and it is defined to distinguish non-military engineering from military engineering. Civil engineering takes place in the public sector from municipal through to national governments, and in the private sector from individual homeowners through to international companies.

After doing my schooling from Manav Mission School, Ghaziabad, I did Diploma in Mechanical Engineering from Hewett Polytechnic, Lucknow. I worked in private sector for 3 years and then, in 1970 joined Indian Railways and retired in 2005.
