The Journey of a Teacher: Isha Shaunik's Insights into Teaching English In the world of education, few careers are as impactful as teaching, and few teachers can share their journeys with such warmth and expertise as Isha Shaunik. With a remarkable teaching career spanning over 35 years, Isha has dedicated her life to educating young minds, particularly in the English language. In her own words, she reflects on her experiences, the challenges she faced, and the rewards of being an English teacher. This article delves into what teaching English encompasses, the educational pathways, necessary skills, positive aspects, challenges faced, and a glimpse into a typical day in the life of a dedicated educator. What Is Teaching English? Teaching English is not merely about imparting knowledge of a language; it is an art that requires passion and dedication. As Isha emphasizes, a successful English teacher needs to command the language, use correct intonation, and possess a rich vocabulary to engage students effectively. Beyond technical skills, teaching English involves creating an enthusiastic learning environment where children can adapt to the nuances of grammar and structure. This multifaceted approach is vital since the subject is often part of the curriculum in a nation where English is an additional language, making it essential for educators to captivate their audience from the first word. Education Isha Shaunik believes that a strong command of the English language is fundamental for any teacher. Not only must one have English as a qualifying subject during graduation, but a true passion for literature is also crucial. Understanding the depth of the language allows teachers to instill a sense of curiosity and appreciation in their students, making lessons not just informative but also enriching and engaging. The subtleties of language are essential, and Isha is keenly aware that intonation can alter meanings. Good intonation not only helps in the correct pronunciation of words but also gives clarity to complex concepts. As she notes, an English teacher must master the art of spoken language to maintain student attention, ensuring that the message conveyed resonates well with young, impressionable minds. Understanding grammar instinctively is another pivotal educational aspect that Isha highlights. A teacher must not only know the rules but be able to teach them in a way that emphasizes practicality and application. This foundation enables students to form correct sentences and comprehend the intricacies of language, which is crucial in their overall development. Equipped with knowledge about the evolution of English, Isha agrees that every teacher should appreciate how the language has transformed over the years. This historical context provides students with a deeper understanding and an appreciation for the language they are learning. By teaching them about the spread of English and its cultural significance, teachers can foster a more profound respect and interest in the subject matter. Skills Effective communication is perhaps the most essential skill for an English teacher, as Isha notes. Teachers must convey their ideas clearly and in a manner that resonates with their students. The ability to articulate thoughts succinctly while maintaining a friendly demeanor creates an inviting atmosphere conducive to learning. In her experience, Isha emphasizes that excellent oratory skills can breathe life into lessons. A teacher's voice should be varied and animated, especially when discussing literature or poetry, captivating students and drawing them into the world of language. Isha has observed how innovative theater classes are becoming popular, further enhancing teachers' delivery methods. To stay relevant, Isha underscores the importance of continual reading. An English teacher must keep abreast of new literature, trends, and styles of writing, which helps to enrich their lessons. This commitment to staying informed not only benefits their teaching but also demonstrates a lifelong love of learning that students can emulate. Patience is a virtue that Isha values highly in her role as an educator, particularly when working with young children. She notes that teachers must possess the ability to support and nurture their students, accepting that learning takes time and varies from child to child. This patience is a testament to the dedication teachers have towards their students and the learning process. Adaptation to different learning styles and the personality of students is another necessary skill highlighted by Isha. Teachers must become adept at changing their approaches and strategies to suit the needs of each child, creating an inclusive and supportive learning environment. Finally, Isha points out the importance of strong interpersonal skills. Engaging with students, parents, and colleagues requires an ability to build positive relationships. A teacher acts as a bridge, fostering communication and collaboration among various stakeholders in the educational process, which is vital for the overall growth of students. Positives Isha describes teaching as a challenging profession filled with excitement. Each day presents unique situations and stories, ensuring that no two days are alike. The dynamism inherent in teaching creates opportunities for both educators and students to grow together. In her journey, Isha has felt a deep sense of responsibility and satisfaction knowing that she plays a pivotal role in shaping future citizens. Teachers are seen as mentors, contributing to society by nurturing young minds, and this impact is incredibly fulfilling. Teaching is often considered a noble profession in India, a sentiment that Isha cherishes. As a teacher, one earns respect not only from students but from the community, acknowledging the significant influence and guidance educators provide. Isha recognizes the balanced lifestyle that teaching offers. She explains that teachers can spend time with their families while also fulfilling their duties, allowing them to lead enriched lives, maximizing both their professional and personal commitments. An interesting perspective shared by Isha is that a teacher never truly retires. While she may have stepped back from active teaching, her passion for education continues, showing that the influence of a teacher endures well beyond the classroom walls. Challenges Despite the benefits, Isha acknowledges that teaching is a profession where monetary value and recognition can be lacking. Despite being the foundation builders of society, many teachers feel undervalued in terms of compensation, which poses a significant challenge in attracting and retaining quality educators. One of the toughest obstacles teachers face, according to Isha, is managing relationships with parents. Parents are often protective and concerned, possessing strong opinions about their child's education. Navigating these feelings with care and sensitivity is a skill that teachers must develop to foster healthy partnerships. Isha talks about the limited opportunities for career advancement in teaching. Although a teacher can progress through various roles, the lack of hierarchical growth after reaching certain positions can be disheartening for many educators who seek further development and opportunities. A Day Of A typical day for Isha begins early, organized and ready to embrace the responsibilities of a teacher's life. As she arrives at school, her day commences with administrative tasks like taking attendance, then quickly shifts into engaging lessons that spur student learning and interaction. The rhythm of a teacher's day is punctuated by the vibrancy of classroom discussions and the joyful chaos that young learners bring, making it an energetic experience. In conclusion, teaching English, as illustrated by Isha Shaunik, is a journey filled with passion, collaboration, and continuous evolution. It is a profession that not only impacts students' lives but also shapes the future of society. With a balance of challenges and rewards, the career of an English teacher remains a remarkable and noble pursuit, ensuring that the importance of education continues to thrive. Whether through formal education or the simple act of inspiring curiosity, teaching will always be at the heart of a promising future. | |

Teaching English is a great challenge, because teaching, whatever the subject one has to teach students, is a permanent challenge. Even more so, English is doubly a challenge because you have to teach children not only to talk but to think in a different language. To teach English, and the cultures of the countries where it is spoken, is to open the minds of children, who perhaps through the language, realize the possibilities they have to know other ways of thinking, other ways of living. In short is to teach them that communication is not only in Spanish but there are other human groups, other human cultures, that have a different language and is good to learn them. And since English is a universal language, not one, but the universal language, the challenge becomes more exciting.
"I studied English because it seemed to me that it was a career that was going to have a lot of job opportunities, and I was not mistaken, and to take advantage of the year i lived with Americans when i went abroad with a student scholarship, which gave me a good level of English to begin with. I studied in the UNT, in the Faculty of Philosophy and Letters, and while studying English, that was what would allow me to live, I studied philosophy that was what I was passionate about. I graduated as a teacher in English and i got my degree in philosophy in 1974 and 1977 respectively. By paternal suggestion I decided to set up an English academy with which I was able to build my own company, still running today with branches in the south of my province. In addition to teaching English in my academy, i taught English in a private secondary institution and in the UNSTA. Also, along with English, i taught many other things like anthropology, epistemology, logic and psychology, but in fact most of my working hours were dedicated to English. I made several trips to the United States with students from my academy, seeking to have them inmerge in the language, which is necessary to speak it."
