The Journey of a French Language Instructor: Insights from Dr. Shivika Dutt

Dr. Shivika Dutt invites us into the fascinating world of French language teaching, a profession characterized by both passion and resilience. With nearly two decades of experience in imparting French education, Dr. Dutt sheds light on the intricacies involved in teaching a language that is not only globally revered but also brimming with cultural richness. This article will explore what it means to teach French, the necessary educational qualifications, essential skills, the positives of pursuing this career, potential challenges, and a glimpse into a typical day in the life of a French language instructor.

What Is Teaching French?

Teaching French is a rewarding profession that involves imparting knowledge of the French language, its grammar, pronunciation, and cultural context to students. This role is especially valued today, as French ranks among the most desirable languages in the global job market. Dr. Dutt emphasizes that apart from teaching grammar and vocabulary, instructors often engage students with French culture, literature, and real-life conversational practices. With its pronounced tradition and distinction within international organizations like the United Nations, French remains a sought-after second language, broadening career opportunities for those fluent in it.

Education

Formal Education

### Formal Education Image

A formal educational background is pivotal in becoming a proficient French language instructor. Dr. Dutt herself obtained a three-year degree in French, equivalent to the C2 level as per international language standards. She encourages aspiring teachers to consider university programs that offer comprehensive training from undergraduate to master's levels, including opportunities for doctoral research in French studies. This structured education ensures that educators are well-equipped with both the linguistic skills and the pedagogical techniques required for superior instruction.

English Language & Grammar

### English Language & Grammar Image

An understanding of English language and grammar plays a crucial role in teaching French effectively. Dr. Dutt notes that many students come with prior knowledge of English, which can often be a double-edged sword. As students draw comparisons between the two languages, a solid grasp of English grammar helps instructors clarify complex French structures and pronunciations. This connection aids students in navigating the intricacies of French grammar, profiting from their existing language knowledge.

French Culture

### French Culture Image

Incorporating elements of French culture into lessons is essential for creating engaging and interactive learning environments. Dr. Dutt elaborates on how elements like French literature, cuisine, history, and cinema can enrich the educational experience. Teachers who weave cultural references into their sessions can foster a deeper appreciation of the language, helping students see French as more than just a subject but as a gateway to a vibrant lifestyle.

Literature

### Literature Image

An understanding of French literature enhances the teaching of the language as it allows instructors to introduce students to classic works by influential playwrights, poets, and novelists. Dr. Dutt argues that familiarity with French literature not only helps in language acquisition but also stimulates discussions about themes integral to the culture and historical context. Such discussions often ignite student enthusiasm and further their language understanding.

Skills

Communication Skills

### Communication Skills Image

Strong communication skills are essential for any language instructor, particularly in teaching French. Dr. Dutt stresses the significance of clear articulation and a good accent, as these elements are vital for students to grasp the sounds of the language. Effective communication also involves engaging students in dialogue and encouraging them to practice conversational skills, which can sometimes be challenging due to varying proficiency levels.

Listening Skills

### Listening Skills Image

Listening skills are equally vital in teaching. Dr. Dutt highlights that instructors need to be attentive listeners to aid students in developing their own listening abilities. This skill not only aids in accent and pronunciation management but also enables educators to identify areas where students struggle, allowing them to adjust their teaching methods accordingly and provide personalized support.

Good Memory

### Good Memory Image

A good memory underpins the language teaching process. In her experience, Dr. Dutt notes that language instructors should possess the ability to remember vocabulary, grammatical rules, and cultural references that can enhance lessons. Creative memorization techniques, such as practicing conversations with friends and family, can further solidify language retention for both students and teachers.

Interactive Session Management

### Interactive Session Management Image

Managing interactive sessions effectively can elevate the learning experience. Dr. Dutt applies various techniques, including the integration of video clips and multimedia content into her lessons. This approach not only keeps students engaged but also allows them to experience the language in diverse contexts, which promotes thorough understanding and retention.

Patience

### Patience Image

The teaching profession inherently demands a significant level of patience, particularly when dealing with language learners who may find French difficult. Dr. Dutt affirms that patience is critical for addressing student inquiries, as learners often compare new concepts to already familiar ones. Cultivating a supportive environment where students feel free to ask questions fosters better learning outcomes.

Positives

Monetary Benefits

### Monetary Benefits Image

One of the most attractive aspects of teaching French is the potential for lucrative financial rewards. Dr. Dutt notes that the demand for French speakers in various fields often results in higher salaries, significantly enhancing the financial prospects for language instructors. Additionally, teachers can earn money from freelance tutoring or developing language content, maximizing their income opportunities.

No Age Limit

### No Age Limit Image

Another appealing positive is the flexibility regarding age when pursuing a career in French language instruction. Dr. Dutt encourages individuals at any stage of life to embrace language learning, affirming that one can start teaching French no matter their age. This inclusivity allows for a diverse range of instructors, each bringing unique experiences and perspectives to the field.

Unlimited Job Opportunities

### Unlimited Job Opportunities Image

The versatility of French opens the door to an abundance of job opportunities. With French being spoken across several continents, positions are available in educational institutions, international organizations, and even private sector companies. Dr. Dutt emphasizes that this flexibility allows one to explore various careers, from educating in schools to translating for governmental bodies.

Travelling

### Travelling Image

Many positions for French instructors come with chances for international travel. The demand for French speakers is global, and jobs often require instructors to travel to teach or engage in cultural exchanges. Dr. Dutt shared how her position has enabled her to experience the world while doing what she loves – a considerable draw for many in the profession.

Flexible Timings

### Flexible Timings Image

One notable advantage of teaching French is the flexibility it provides in scheduling. Unlike traditional 9-to-5 jobs, language instructors can often set their own hours, making it easier to balance work with personal commitments. This flexibility is particularly appealing for those looking to cultivate a work-life balance that suits their lifestyles.

Challenges

Maintaining Interest Level

### Maintaining Interest Level Image

Despite the myriad benefits, there exists a significant challenge in maintaining interest among students. Dr. Dutt emphasizes that, as the curriculum grows more complex, instructors must continually find innovative ways to engage their students. Keeping lessons interactive and relevant is key to sustaining enthusiasm and motivation throughout the course of learning.

A Day Of

Teaching French

A typical day for Dr. Dutt begins with preparing her lessons rigorously to ensure they are engaging and informative. Upon arriving at her university, she conducts various sessions where she incorporates diverse multimedia resources to enhance the learning experience. Additionally, she emphasizes the importance of practice, encouraging students to use their new language skills in practical contexts, bridging the gap between theoretical knowledge and real-world application. She also actively participates in language discussion forums to share best practices with colleagues, showcasing her commitment to lifelong learning and professional growth.

In conclusion, the profession of teaching French is not merely about imparting knowledge; it's about instilling a passion for the language and culture that can transform lives and careers. As highlighted by Dr. Shivika Dutt, individuals interested in pursuing this path can find immense satisfaction, both professionally and personally. The enriching experiences shared by Dr. Dutt illustrate the profound impact that language education can have—helping students navigate a multicultural world while laying the foundation for future opportunities.

Teaching English is a great challenge, because teaching, whatever the subject one has to teach students, is a permanent challenge. Even more so, English is doubly a challenge because you have to teach children not only to talk but to think in a different language. To teach English, and the cultures of the countries where it is spoken, is to open the minds of children, who perhaps through the language, realize the possibilities they have to know other ways of thinking, other ways of living. In short is to teach them that communication is not only in Spanish but there are other human groups, other human cultures, that have a different language and is good to learn them. And since English is a universal language, not one, but the universal language, the challenge becomes more exciting.

"I studied English because it seemed to me that it was a career that was going to have a lot of job opportunities, and I was not mistaken, and to take advantage of the year i lived with Americans when i went abroad with a student scholarship, which gave me a good level of English to begin with. I studied in the UNT, in the Faculty of Philosophy and Letters, and while studying English, that was what would allow me to live, I studied philosophy that was what I was passionate about. I graduated as a teacher in English and i got my degree in philosophy in 1974 and 1977 respectively. By paternal suggestion I decided to set up an English academy with which I was able to build my own company, still running today with branches in the south of my province. In addition to teaching English in my academy, i taught English in a private secondary institution and in the UNSTA. Also, along with English, i taught many other things like anthropology, epistemology, logic and psychology, but in fact most of my working hours were dedicated to English. I made several trips to the United States with students from my academy, seeking to have them inmerge in the language, which is necessary to speak it."
