The Art of Teaching English: Insights from Dr. Kirti Upadhyay

Teaching English is a nuanced profession that extends far beyond the basic reading and writing of words. It embodies a rich tapestry of emotional expression, linguistic subtleties, and a deep understanding of human psychology. Dr. Kirti Upadhyay, an accomplished educator with over two decades of experience, shares invaluable insights into this rewarding yet challenging field. In this article, we explore the essential elements of teaching English, from education and skills to the challenges faced and the joy that comes with shaping young minds.

What Is Teachings English?

Teaching English: More than Just a Subject

Teaching English involves imparting knowledge of the language, but it also encompasses teaching students about expression, intonation, and connection. According to Dr. Upadhyay, much of what makes a great English teacher is the ability to convey the nuances of the language, which include the sounds and accents that enrich communication. It requires an understanding of how language can express emotions, and without this dimension, teaching English can become a dry, mechanical process.

As an example, Dr. Upadhyay notes how teaching poetry is not just about the words; it’s about creating an immersive experience for students. When a teacher reads a poem and effectively utilizes intonation and pauses, it can evoke feelings and stimulate imagination—attributes essential for effective learning.

Education

English Literature: A Necessary Foundation

A robust knowledge of English literature is paramount for any English teacher. Literature provides the context and content needed to spark interest and facilitate understanding among students. Dr. Upadhyay emphasizes the importance of knowing various genres, including poetry, prose, and drama, so that teachers can adeptly guide their students through complex themes and literary devices.

For instance, when introducing a new text, a teacher well-versed in literature can draw parallels to students' lives, making lessons relatable and engaging. This not only helps students appreciate the beauty of language but also encourages them to express their ideas clearly and creatively.

Psychology: Understanding the Learner

The psychological aspects of teaching are equally critical. Dr. Upadhyay highlights the need to grasp the psychological profile of students to enhance their learning experience. Recognizing the varied interests and motivations of students allows teachers to tailor their approaches effectively.

For example, a teacher who understands a student’s struggles with learning English can provide creative assignments or suggest books that align with their interests, fostering a more engaging learning atmosphere. This personalized approach can significantly boost both the student's confidence and capability in the subject.

Skills

Expressiveness: Crafting Engaging Lessons

Expressiveness in teaching is crucial, as it captivates students’ attention and aids their understanding. Dr. Upadhyay notes that an expressive teacher can create a vivid picture in the minds of their students, which is especially important for subjects like English that involve creative interpretation.

For instance, when discussing historical contexts in literature, an engaging teacher will paint a mental picture, allowing students to immerse themselves in the narrative. This not only helps students retain information but also stimulates their imaginations.

Patience and Anger Management

Patience is another essential quality for English teachers. The classroom often presents situations where students may struggle, misbehave, or exhibit a lack of interest. Dr. Upadhyay explains that teachers ought to develop anger management techniques to respond constructively to such challenges.

By remaining calm and supportive, an English teacher can create a safe environment where students feel free to make mistakes and express themselves. This approach encourages exploration and learning, ultimately enhancing students' grasp of the language.

Positives

Personality Growth & Confidence

### Personality Growth & Confidence Image

One of the most rewarding aspects of teaching English is the significant impact it has on a teacher's and students' personal growth. Dr. Upadhyay remarks that as students learn to communicate effectively, they develop confidence and social skills that are vital for their futures.

Teaching English not only broadens their communication abilities but also opens doors to various career possibilities, allowing individuals to engage in different professional fields, from journalism to international relations.

Interacting with New People

### Interacting with New People Image

Dr. Upadhyay highlights how a strong command of English facilitates interactions with people from diverse backgrounds. This ability to connect fosters a culture of inclusiveness and understanding, enriching the educational experience for both students and teachers alike.

Furthermore, being able to communicate in English can make traveling easier, boosting both personal and professional networking opportunities.

Challenges

Mother Tongue Influence

### Mother Tongue Influence Image

Despite its rewards, teaching English comes with its share of challenges. A prevalent issue is the interference of students’ native languages on their English pronunciation and grammar. Dr. Upadhyay mentions that many students may carry their mother tongue's phonetic nuances into English, causing communication barriers.

To address this, teachers often need to implement strategies that help clarify these pronunciation differences, ensuring students can express themselves effectively in English.

Disinterested Students

### Disinterested Students Image

A significant hurdle is the lack of interest some students may exhibit toward learning English. Dr. Upadhyay emphasizes that many students struggle because they haven’t been adequately introduced to reading or literary exploration outside of the academic environment.

Teachers can combat this disinterest by integrating engaging materials like movies, literature aligned with students' tastes, and interactive activities to nurture their curiosity and love for the language.

A Day Of

Teaching History: A Perspective

A day in the life of Dr. Upadhyay typically begins with teaching history through literature for higher classes. She employs storytelling techniques that do not merely convey information but allow students to engage deeply with the content. This blend of history and English encourages students to visualize the past, which strengthens their comprehension and retention.

As she explains literature related to historical contexts, her satisfaction stems from witnessing students connect emotionally with the material, which significantly enhances their learning experience.

Conclusion

In summary, teaching English is a multifaceted career that requires dedication, creativity, and an understanding of both the language and the learners. Educators like Dr. Kirti Upadhyay exemplify the profound difference that passionate teaching can make in students' lives, transforming not just their grasp of English but nurturing their confidence and identity in a globalized world. A career in teaching English is not merely about imparting knowledge; it’s about shaping minds, fostering self-expression, and building connections that resonate beyond the classroom.

Teaching English is a great challenge, because teaching, whatever the subject one has to teach students, is a permanent challenge. Even more so, English is doubly a challenge because you have to teach children not only to talk but to think in a different language. To teach English, and the cultures of the countries where it is spoken, is to open the minds of children, who perhaps through the language, realize the possibilities they have to know other ways of thinking, other ways of living. In short is to teach them that communication is not only in Spanish but there are other human groups, other human cultures, that have a different language and is good to learn them. And since English is a universal language, not one, but the universal language, the challenge becomes more exciting.

"I studied English because it seemed to me that it was a career that was going to have a lot of job opportunities, and I was not mistaken, and to take advantage of the year i lived with Americans when i went abroad with a student scholarship, which gave me a good level of English to begin with. I studied in the UNT, in the Faculty of Philosophy and Letters, and while studying English, that was what would allow me to live, I studied philosophy that was what I was passionate about. I graduated as a teacher in English and i got my degree in philosophy in 1974 and 1977 respectively. By paternal suggestion I decided to set up an English academy with which I was able to build my own company, still running today with branches in the south of my province. In addition to teaching English in my academy, i taught English in a private secondary institution and in the UNSTA. Also, along with English, i taught many other things like anthropology, epistemology, logic and psychology, but in fact most of my working hours were dedicated to English. I made several trips to the United States with students from my academy, seeking to have them inmerge in the language, which is necessary to speak it."
