The Journey of a Teacher: Sunaina's Insight into the World of English Education

In the heart of Dehradun, Sunaina, an enthusiastic English teacher, shares her unique experiences and insights from the classroom. With a background in history, political science, and English, she describes her journey through academia and her vibrant teaching career. This article delves into Sunaina’s perspective on teaching English, exploring the essential elements of this profession, from the requisite education and skills to the daily routine and challenges faced. Through her engaging storytelling style, she captures the essence of nurturing young minds in the world of language.

What Is Teaching English?

Teaching English is more than just imparting language knowledge; it is an art form that combines storytelling with education. Sunaina emphasizes the importance of connecting students to the narrative of a story, enabling them to immerse themselves in an imaginary world full of creativity. The goal is to enrich the students’ vocabulary and imagination through innovative teaching methods, such as using props and engaging storytelling techniques. In this way, English teaching becomes a journey where both teacher and student explore the intricacies of language and literature together.

Education

Reading Books

### Reading Books Image

A solid foundation for teaching English begins with extensive reading. Sunaina highlights the necessity of diving into literature to not only enhance her own vocabulary and knowledge but also to recommend books that foster students' learning. Reading widely helps teachers suggest age-appropriate texts that can captivate students' imaginations and expand their linguistic abilities. It’s through this reading that educators can inspire students to develop a love for books and language.

Historical Background on Classics

### Historical Background on Classics Image

Understanding the historical context of literary classics is crucial for an English teacher. Sunaina explains that having a grasp of authors like Chaucer and Aristotle allows her to connect the past with today’s world. This depth of knowledge enables her to enrich her students’ literary experience, making literature feel relevant and alive. Teaching children about these influential figures and their works serves as an important bridge to understanding not just the language but the cultural significance behind it.

Online Content

### Online Content Image

In today’s digital age, online resources play a significant role in education. Sunaina notes that many invaluable pieces of literature and poetry are only available online, making it essential for modern teachers to leverage these tools. The wealth of information found on the internet enhances curriculum and offers students access to a wider range of texts that can supplement their learning experience. This adaptability has become a fundamental part of her teaching strategy.

Grammar and Vocabulary

### Grammar and Vocabulary Image

A strong command of grammar and vocabulary is indispensable for any English teacher. Sunaina emphasizes that a well-rounded knowledge of these elements not only influences her teaching but also impacts her students’ learning outcomes. When teachers communicate effectively, their students are more likely to absorb concepts and apply them to their own language use, thereby enhancing their overall English proficiency.

Skills

Storytelling

### Storytelling Image

Storytelling is the heartbeat of effective English teaching. According to Sunaina, the ability to narrate a story creatively can captivate students, transforming a lesson into an engaging experience. By infusing her teaching with dramatization and imaginative elements, she ensures that her students connect emotionally with the narratives they explore. For instance, when her students learn about literary characters, she encourages them to envision themselves in those roles, making the learning process both memorable and impactful.

Audio Visuals

### Audio Visuals Image

The use of audio-visual aids can significantly enrich the learning experience. Sunaina learned the effectiveness of these methods during her B.Ed program and now applies them to enhance her teaching. By incorporating multimedia elements, she appeals to different learning styles and keeps her students’ attention focused. This approach fosters an immersive learning environment where language acquisition is not only effective but also enjoyable.

Use of Props

### Use of Props Image

Integrating props into lessons creates a tangible connection between students and the content. Sunaina often uses puppets or other visual materials to bring stories to life, capturing her students' imaginations and making lessons interactive. For example, using props to tell the tale of Cinderella allows students to visualize the characters and events, thereby deepening their understanding of the story while simultaneously developing their language skills.

Communication

### Communication Image

Clear communication is vital in the classroom. Sunaina believes that effective teaching involves not just conveying information but also expressing emotions and feelings related to the stories potentially. By communicating in a relatable manner, she builds a bond with her students, facilitating a deeper understanding of the narratives they tackle. This relationship fosters an atmosphere of trust and encourages students to share their thoughts and feelings freely.

Empathy

### Empathy Image

Empathy plays a crucial role in Sunaina’s approach to teaching. Understanding the emotional undertones of stories allows her to connect with her students on a personal level. By emphasizing the emotional aspects involved in storytelling, she helps students relate to characters and themes, enriching their learning experience. This emotional connection cultivates a classroom environment where students feel valued and understood, which enhances their educational journey.

Positives

Motivating Job

### Motivating Job Image

One of the most rewarding aspects of teaching English is the motivation it brings to educators. Sunaina finds joy in witnessing her students achieve academic successes, as it affirms her impact as a teacher. The recognition she receives from her students, including flowers and dedications, reinforces her passion for teaching and motivates her to continually seek ways to engage and inspire them.

Love from Children

### Love from Children Image

The genuine affection and admiration from students is a significant motivator for Sunaina. She cherishes the smiles and affection received from her students, which make the challenges of teaching worthwhile. The emotional bonds formed in the classroom often lead to heartfelt interactions, affirming her commitment to creating a positive and nurturing environment.

Personality Development

### Personality Development Image

Teaching English serves as a catalyst for both student and teacher growth. Sunaina emphasizes that as her students develop their communication skills, they also cultivate their personalities. In today’s world, where good English language skills are increasingly essential, she recognizes the importance of fostering these abilities in her students for their future success.

Networking

### Networking Image

Engagement with parents and the community provides invaluable networking opportunities for teachers. Sunaina shares that parent-teacher meetings are not just platforms for discussing student progress but also chances to build relationships with families. This networking can lead to collaborative efforts to enhance students' English language skills, creating a community-focused approach to education.

Travelling

### Travelling Image

Traveling for educational events and competitions broadens Sunaina's horizons. Through participation in quizzes and debates at different schools, she gains new perspectives and insights which enrich her teaching practices. This experience allows her to witness the talents of other students, expanding her own knowledge and understanding of diverse educational approaches.

Exposure to Different Talents

### Exposure to Different Talents Image

Being part of craft competitions and similar events exposes Sunaina to a multitude of ideas and artistic expressions. By engaging with creativity showcased by other students, she continually learns new methods and techniques that she can incorporate into her own teaching. This exposure not only benefits her professional development but ultimately enhances her students' learning opportunities as well.

Challenges

Lack of Awareness

### Lack of Awareness Image

A significant challenge in teaching English is the decreasing interest among students in reading books. Sunaina notes that many children are unfamiliar with classic literature, making it necessary for teachers to navigate language instruction carefully. To bridge the gap, educators often need to explain concepts in their native language to foster understanding, particularly when students struggle with complex English texts.

Technology is a Boon and a Bane

### Technology is a Boon and a Bane Image

While technology offers valuable resources, it also presents challenges. Sunaina articulates that students often gravitate towards film adaptations of stories instead of reading the original texts. This reliance on visual media can hinder their reading habits, making it imperative for educators to encourage a balanced approach to both reading and viewing. The challenge lies in harnessing technology to enhance learning without letting it detract from essential reading experiences.

A Day Of

Teaching English

### Teaching English Image

Sunaina’s day begins early as she prepares for her classes with zest and enthusiasm. Arriving at school by 7 AM, she participates in the morning assembly, setting a positive tone for her students’ day. With a structured schedule, she engages in four periods of instruction before a well-deserved break, allowing her to refresh and recharge. Following the break, she dives back into teaching, maintaining an energetic pace that culminates in her school day ending around 2 PM. With each class, she strives to create an enriching learning experience that resonates with her students long after they leave the classroom.

In conclusion, teaching English is a noble profession filled with both rewards and challenges. Through skills, creativity, and an empathetic approach, educators like Sunaina play a pivotal role in shaping the future of their students, fostering not only language skills but also personal growth. As teachers continue to navigate the evolving landscape of education, their impact is profound, making the world of teaching a valuable and fulfilling career.

Teaching English is a great challenge, because teaching, whatever the subject one has to teach students, is a permanent challenge. Even more so, English is doubly a challenge because you have to teach children not only to talk but to think in a different language. To teach English, and the cultures of the countries where it is spoken, is to open the minds of children, who perhaps through the language, realize the possibilities they have to know other ways of thinking, other ways of living. In short is to teach them that communication is not only in Spanish but there are other human groups, other human cultures, that have a different language and is good to learn them. And since English is a universal language, not one, but the universal language, the challenge becomes more exciting.

"I studied English because it seemed to me that it was a career that was going to have a lot of job opportunities, and I was not mistaken, and to take advantage of the year i lived with Americans when i went abroad with a student scholarship, which gave me a good level of English to begin with. I studied in the UNT, in the Faculty of Philosophy and Letters, and while studying English, that was what would allow me to live, I studied philosophy that was what I was passionate about. I graduated as a teacher in English and i got my degree in philosophy in 1974 and 1977 respectively. By paternal suggestion I decided to set up an English academy with which I was able to build my own company, still running today with branches in the south of my province. In addition to teaching English in my academy, i taught English in a private secondary institution and in the UNSTA. Also, along with English, i taught many other things like anthropology, epistemology, logic and psychology, but in fact most of my working hours were dedicated to English. I made several trips to the United States with students from my academy, seeking to have them inmerge in the language, which is necessary to speak it."
