The Journey of an Architect: Anugha Kakaru on Crafting Sustainable Spaces

Architecture is more than just a profession; it’s a way of sculpting the environments in which we live, work, and play. Today, we delve into the inspiring journey of Anugha Kakaru, an architect whose insights illuminate the vital role of architecture in society. With a career spanning various aspects of design and education, Anugha shares her experiences, the skills vital to the profession, the challenges faced, and the rewarding nature of this field. Join us as we explore the intricate world of architecture through her eyes.

What Is Architecture?

Architecture is one of the oldest professions, intricately tied to the fundamental human needs of shelter, safety, and comfort. As Anugha explains, architecture transcends mere building; it is about creating special environments that resonate with the people who inhabit them. Every aspect of our daily lives—be it the houses we reside in, the schools we attend, or the public spaces we experience—reflects the essence of architectural design. By marrying creativity with functionality, architects play a crucial role in shaping both urban landscapes and rural settings, addressing human needs while considering sustainability and environmental impact.

Education

Well Read

### Well Read Image

To embark on a journey in architecture, a well-rounded education is essential. An architect must be well-read and aware of global happenings, cultural trends, and historical contexts. This comprehensive knowledge empowers architects to create spaces that are not only functional but resonate with those who use them. As Anugha points out, this awareness extends beyond academia into realms such as film, music, and sociology, enriching the architect's perspective.

Knowledge All Subjects

### Knowledge All Subjects Image

The multifaceted nature of architecture demands a broad understanding of various subjects, including science, arts, and humanities. Anugha notes that successful architects are those who excel in diverse fields rather than confining their expertise to a single discipline. This integrative knowledge enhances creativity and ensures that designs are informed by a holistic view of human experience.

Project and Model Making

### Project and Model Making Image

Hands-on experience is paramount in architectural education. Engaging in project and model making allows aspiring architects to translate their theoretical knowledge into tangible designs. Anugha emphasizes that a passion for crafting and modeling in school can foster critical three-dimensional thinking, an invaluable skill for a successful career in architecture.

Skills

Communication

### Communication Image

Effective communication is at the heart of architecture. Anugha highlights that architects must articulate their ideas clearly through various mediums, including sketches, written documents, and verbal presentations. The ability to convey concepts and emotions ensures collaborative synergy between architects, clients, and stakeholders, making communication skills indispensable in the field.

Physical and Mental Hard Work

### Physical and Mental Hard Work Image

Architecture is not for the faint-hearted; it demands both physical and mental endurance. Beyond theoretical studies, architects spend considerable time on-site, navigating real-world challenges. Anugha underscores the necessity for hard work and resilience, as architects must often deal with unforeseen hurdles that arise during the building process.

Reading and Writing Skills

### Reading and Writing Skills Image

Reading extensively and honing writing skills enhance critical thinking and informed decision-making. As Anugha explains, the ability to engage with diverse texts not only expands one’s knowledge base but also cultivates the architect's voice, enabling them to articulate ideas that resonate with broader audiences.

Risk Taking

### Risk Taking Image

The courage to take risks is a defining characteristic of successful architects. Anugha encourages aspiring architects to think outside conventional boundaries, exploring innovative design solutions. This risk-taking can manifest in various forms, whether through unique architectural designs or socially impactful projects.

Empathy

### Empathy Image

Empathy forms the foundation of effective architectural design. Anugha emphasizes that architects must strive to understand the needs and desires of their clients and communities. By prioritizing people over personal preferences, architects can create spaces that genuinely enhance the user’s experience while being mindful of environmental sustainability.

Positives

Well Rounded Profession

### Well Rounded Profession Image

A career in architecture molds professionals who are not only technically adept but also culturally aware. Anugha asserts that the profession fosters interdisciplinary skills that can be applied across various fields, making architects versatile contributors in the job market.

Sensitive and Sustainable Human

### Sensitive and Sustainable Human Image

Studying architecture cultivates a deep sensitivity to societal and environmental issues. Anugha notes that architects learn to regard the world around them with heightened awareness, leading to sustainable choices in their personal and professional lives. This transformation influences how they approach design, encouraging practices that honor both humanity and nature.

Setting up your own Business

### Setting up your own Business Image

The entrepreneurial spirit is inherent in architecture, providing graduates with the tools to forge their own paths. Anugha highlights that architects can establish their own practices, allowing them to innovate freely and pursue projects that ignite their passion.

Challenges

Physically and Mentally Demanding

### Physically and Mentally Demanding Image

The commitment required in architecture is significant, as Anugha points out. While physically exhausting, the mental demands—requiring the constant juggling of creativity and analytical thinking—can lead to burnout. However, the fulfillment gained from overcoming these challenges often outweighs the arduous journey.

Placements in Corporate World

### Placements in Corporate World Image

Unlike many professions, architecture does not typically offer structured placement opportunities. Anugha explains that while this independence allows architects to pursue their unique career paths, it also requires a proactive approach to finding work and establishing credibility in the field.

Long Study Period

### Long Study Period Image

The educational pathway to becoming an architect is extensive, often taking five years to complete a degree followed by additional years for postgraduate study. Anugha acknowledges that this lengthy commitment can deter some students but emphasizes the depth of knowledge acquired during this time.

Expensive Education

### Expensive Education Image

The costs associated with architectural education can be significant due to the resources required for proper training. Anugha notes that while this investment can be daunting, the comprehensive learning experience often justifies the financial expenditure.

Global Competition

### Global Competition Image

As the architecture sector grows increasingly competitive, architects face challenges from a global marketplace. Anugha stresses that while this competition may seem daunting, it also opens opportunities for innovative collaboration and cross-cultural exchanges, enriching the architectural landscape.

A Day Of

Architecture

### Architecture Image

A typical day in Anugha's life as an architect blends creativity with rigorous organization. Each morning begins with a quick review of ongoing projects, followed by meetings with clients and colleagues to discuss designs and progress. Site visits are crucial, allowing architects to engage directly with contractors and oversee construction efforts. Anugha's days often extend late into the evening, filled with last-minute project refinements and the pressing deadlines that define this fast-paced profession. Despite the long hours, each day brings the opportunity to shape the built environment, leaving a lasting impact on society.

The journey of an architect is both rewarding and challenging, weaving creativity with discipline. As we reflect on Anugha Kakaru's experiences, it becomes clear that this profession holds the power to shape not only the physical landscape of our world but also to influence our collective future. Architecture stands as a testament to human ingenuity, fostering a sense of belonging while actively contributing to sustainable development.
