Architectural Research
Kartik Vora | Professor | DIT UniversityWhat is Architectural Research?
Architectural Research is a great Career option. Unfortunately, it is very difficult to find information about What Architectural Research actually is. Most pages on the internet just talk about How to get into Architectural Research. The internet is a great source of information on Architectural Research, but it is second best to learning about the same from a real professional.
Professor Kartik Vora has worked in Architectural Research for 33 years. Professor Kartik Vora defines Architectural Research as:
Architectural Research includes Architectural processes, Architectural products, Architectural performance. The first stage, process, refers to research into processes involved in the design and construction of buildings, and thus might include for example issues of representation, theories of design, modelling of the environment, and so on.
How Professor Kartik Vora got into Architectural Research?
After completing my graduation from CEPT, Ahmedabad, I started doing research on various projects. I was the Chief Researcher for festival of India Exhibition in Russia, Japan & Germany. I also worked with SOM Foundation in Chicago. Since 1984, I have been working as a consultant for various projects.

The Life of an Architectural Researcher: Insights from Karthik Vora In the dynamic field of architecture, the role of a researcher can bridge the gap between creative expression and scientific inquiry. Karthik Vora, a seasoned architect and researcher, offers a glimpse into the multifaceted world of architectural research. Through his experiences, he illustrates not only the necessary educational background but also the essential skills and challenges that come with this rewarding career. Join us as we delve into the life of an architectural researcher, exploring what it entails, the skills required, the positives and challenges faced, and what a typical day looks like. What Is Architectural Research Architectural research involves the systematic investigation of structures, environments, and urban spaces, combining both the artistic and scientific aspects of architecture. It aims to gather insights and data surrounding various elements that impact our built environment and lifestyle. Karthik explains that architectural research is not just about designing buildings; it also encompasses how these structures influence communities and cities on a broader scale. This understanding informs sustainable practices and innovations in urban design. Education To embark on a career in architectural research, one typically needs a master’s degree with a specialization in a specific area of architecture, such as conservation or urban design. Karthik received his education in renowned institutions, including studying in Chicago and earning his PhD from Baroda. Such specialized education equips researchers with the theoretical knowledge and practical skills necessary to explore their areas of interest, ultimately shaping the future of architecture. A fundamental aspect of architectural research is mastering various research methodologies. This could include quantitative analysis or qualitative studies among other approaches. Karthik emphasizes the importance of honing analytical skills to effectively process and synthesize complex information. For instance, during his tenure as a research fellow with the SOM Foundation, he learned the significance of thorough methodologies in yielding credible outcomes in urbanism and architecture. Architectural researchers must develop advanced thinking techniques that allow them to analyze and interpret data creatively and critically. Karthik highlights that the ability to convey complex ideas in simple terms is particularly valuable. For instance, translating architectural data into accessible formats can greatly aid public understanding and engagement with urban projects. Staying current with advancements in architectural science is crucial for researchers. Karthik points out that innovations are emerging constantly, and it's vital to be acquainted with them. A well-informed researcher can utilize cutting-edge solutions and methodologies in their projects, enhancing the impact and relevance of their work. Proficiency in various software tools is also essential for conducting architectural research efficiently. From data processing and image representation to video editing, the technology used in research is continually evolving. Karthik states that being adept at software can significantly improve the quality of presentations and publications, making the research more compelling and effective. Skills Effective writing and comprehensive reading are foundational skills for researchers. Karthik emphasizes that cultivating one's abilities in these areas leads to improved communication and expression of complex ideas. Through extensive reading, researchers can refine their own voice in writing, allowing them to resonate more with diverse audiences. Architectural researchers often collaborate with a variety of stakeholders, making interpersonal skills crucial. Karthik notes that engaging effectively with peers, publishers, and the public can enhance collaboration and information exchange, thereby enriching the research process. These skills foster professional relationships and networking opportunities that are vital in the architectural field. As architecture intersects with numerous disciplines, a strong foundation in logical thinking is essential. According to Karthik, understanding various frameworks, including Aristotle's methods and modern advances in logic, enables researchers to draw coherent conclusions and foster innovative thought processes necessary for architectural design. Analytical proficiency allows researchers to evaluate data critically and derive meaningful insights. Karthik highlights how essential it is to be up-to-date with current analytical techniques, as developments across fields—including the impact of visuals—can greatly influence architectural research outcomes. Visual skills in photography and videography are increasingly vital in architectural research. Karthik explains that the capacity to capture quality images and present them effectively can enhance the narrative of the research and provide a more tangible context for findings. Observation is a uniquely critical skill for an architectural researcher. Karthik believes that a keen sense of observation allows researchers to identify nuances within their environments that might not be immediately apparent. This ability to analyze and synthesize observations into actionable insights is what distinguishes a good architect from a great one. Collaboration is an integral part of architectural research, requiring teamwork across diverse disciplines. Karthik mentions that working with teams—from data processors to consultants—allows for a rich exchange of ideas and expertise, which is essential for comprehensive research outcomes. Positives One of the most appealing aspects of architectural research is the potential for monetary reward. Karthik notes various revenue streams, including writing papers, presenting at conferences, and consulting for projects. This financial viability can make architectural research an attractive career choice. Networking is another beneficial aspect of an architectural research career. Karthik highlights that attending conferences and collaborating on projects creates opportunities to meet industry leaders and peers, fostering professional relationships that can enhance both research and career growth. The satisfaction derived from contributing to the knowledge base of architecture is immensely fulfilling. Karthik emphasizes how researchers can impact future generations by disseminating new ideas and findings, thus shaping the field's evolution and application. Architectural research offers a unique environment for continuous learning and exploration. Karthik believes that staying engaged with the latest advancements keeps the work exciting and fresh, ensuring that researchers are consistently challenged and motivated. Challenges One of the primary challenges faced by architectural researchers is the necessity for continuous knowledge integration. Karthik cautions that with the rapid expansion of knowledge, someone in this field must tirelessly update their understanding to avoid obsolescence. This challenge, while daunting, can also be a motivating factor for personal and professional growth. Navigating the architectural research landscape can be challenging when it comes to securing the right opportunities. Karthik acknowledges that researchers often need to create opportunities for themselves in emerging areas. The ability to pivot and adapt to market needs is essential, as it can significantly influence career trajectories. A Day Of Architectural Research A typical day for an architectural researcher combines various activities, including reading, note-taking, and engaging with peers. Karthik describes his day starting with library visits and online research to stay updated on current literature. For researchers involved in teaching, lessons correlate with their research, creating a dynamic synergy between study and professional practice. Frequently, days also include working on research projects, collecting and analyzing data, and preparing for presentations, all of which form an integral part of advancing their research objectives. In conclusion, the field of architectural research is a vibrant blend of education, continuous learning, and creative exploration. As highlighted by Karthik Vora, it is a career imbued with challenges but equally rewarding in terms of personal satisfaction and professional development. By understanding the demands and rewards of this pathway, future researchers can prepare themselves to contribute significantly to the ever-evolving landscape of architecture. | |
